I visited several communities in Guatemala and Nicaragua in order to document families that were using biogas to promote sustainability on their farms.
The logic behind Bio Gas is that families can use the same waste from livestock to produce gas through a biodigester, and perhaps more importantly, use the liquid byproduct, Biol, as a powerful fertilizer.
Meeting these families was a very enriching experience, they are people who are breaking with traditional paradigms and daring to make a change.
In Central America, firewood is still the main source of energy for cooking, this not only means contamination, it also means an important health problem for women who are in charge of cooking.
The use of Biogas also allows farmers to have access to a cheap and more sustainable fertilizer, and in some cases Bio Gas is even used as a lighting system.
